The National Assembly has officially suspended all legislative proceedings in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82.
In a statement released on Monday by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, it was announced that the suspension takes immediate effect. “I am directed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to inform all members of the National Assembly and the general public that all legislative activities are hereby suspended immediately until Tuesday, 22 July, 2025,” the statement read.
The National Assembly urged all lawmakers to revise their schedules to allow full participation in the burial activities of the late president.
In addition, the leadership of both chambers of the National Assembly extended their condolences to the government and people of Nigeria, the residents of Katsina State, and Buhari’s family.

“President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered for his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and his integrity,” the statement noted. “May Almighty Allah grant his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.”

Buhari previously led the country as military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and later served two terms as civilian president from 2015 to 2023. He died at a private clinic in the UK, where he had reportedly been undergoing medical treatment.
