The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional principles by participating only in the 20 constitutionally recognised Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Lagos State during Saturday’s local government elections, opting not to field candidates in the 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
According to the Lagos State Chairman of ADC, George Ashiru, the party’s decision aligns with the Supreme Court’s 2024 ruling affirming the autonomy and constitutional standing of Nigeria’s 774 LGAs. Ashiru told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that ADC chose to strictly follow the ruling by focusing its electoral campaign and candidate placements solely within the 20 legitimate LGAs in Lagos.
“In line with the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy, ADC has strategically chosen to operate within the bounds of the constitution by contesting only in the recognised 20 LGAs,” Ashiru said.
While the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) is conducting elections across all 57 local councils, including both LGAs and LCDAs, only 15 of the 19 political parties that initially expressed interest submitted final candidate lists.
Ashiru revealed that ADC had initially planned to boycott the polls but was compelled to participate after strong appeals from members and grassroots aspirants with solid support bases in specific LGAs.
“We had initially resolved to stay out, but our members and candidates with strong grassroots support persuaded us to participate,” he explained.

Emphasising the party’s dedication to legal adherence, Ashiru stated that ADC remains committed to upholding the Constitution and will continue to focus its political efforts within lawful boundaries. He also called on LASIEC to ensure transparency and impartiality in the conduct of the elections.

“At the end of the day, people will judge LASIEC’s performance. Ideally, political parties should win where they have strong support,” he added.
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is contesting in all 57 councils and 376 wards, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is competing in 45 councils and 259 wards. The Labour Party has candidates in 22 LGAs and 130 wards, while the Zenith Labour Party is participating in six chairmanship and 21 councillorship positions.
Other political parties participating in the election include Accord, African Action Alliance, Allied People’s Movement, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Social Democratic Party, National Rescue Movement, Young Progressives Party, Youth Party, and Action Peoples Party.
