Iran’s nuclear sites have sustained what the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi described as “enormous damage,” intensifying concerns over the state of Iran’s nuclear programme. Grossi made the revelation in an interview with Radio France Internationale (RFI) amid rising diplomatic tensions between Iran and international watchdogs.
Iran has recently faced criticism for its stance towards international nuclear inspectors. Argentina, Grossi’s home country, condemned what it termed “threats” from Iran against the IAEA chief. Though specific threats were not detailed, Iran’s hardline Kayhan newspaper alleged that Grossi was an Israeli spy and called for his execution — claims Iran has not officially endorsed.
Responding to growing international concern, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, told CBS that there were no threats to inspectors and that they were working in “safe conditions,” although their activities remain suspended.
Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds the extent of the damage caused by recent US military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. While former President Donald Trump claimed the attacks “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, The Washington Post reported that intercepted Iranian communications suggested the damage was far less than anticipated. Initial US intelligence estimates suggested a setback of months rather than years to Iran’s programme.

Despite Iran’s efforts to downplay the situation, international observers remain concerned. The IAEA has confirmed that Iran continues to enrich uranium up to 60% purity — well beyond civilian energy requirements. Grossi told CBS that Iran could resume high-level uranium enrichment “within months,” even after the reported strikes.

Israel, a vocal critic of Iran’s nuclear ambitions, insists the programme has been delayed by years. However, Iran maintains that its nuclear efforts are strictly for peaceful purposes and continues to dismiss allegations of pursuing nuclear weapons.
While Iran faces mounting international scrutiny, the debate over nuclear capability and regional stability continues, with the IAEA urging transparency and cooperation from Tehran.
